Breathe Life Day: The Movement That Began in the Dark

Breathe Life Day

“In the dead of night, when all else sleeps, I lay awake… haunted by my failures, yet finding strength to rise again.”
Beauty From Ashes, Dr. Yonnicka

The Day the World Took a Breath

On November 5, 2024, the world of one woman broke wide open.
It was early morning—quiet, ordinary, and then suddenly not. What began as another day ended as a line drawn in eternity: the day I became a survivor.

Domestic violence is not a private wound. It is a public crisis hiding behind closed doors. According to the World Health Organization, 1 in 3 women globally has experienced physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner. In the United States alone, the National Coalition Against

Domestic Violence reports that nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner. That translates to more than 10 million people each year in a nation that often calls itself safe.

But numbers can’t say what souls carry. Behind every statistic is a soul; a mother, a sister, a leader, a friend, learning how to breathe again.

A Day of Remembrance, A Day of Rebirth

Out of that morning’s ashes, a movement was born. November 5 is now recognized by Breathe Life Ministries as Breathe Life Day—an annual observance for anyone who has endured abuse, loss of freedom, fear, or the heavy silence of trauma. It is also a day of remembrance for those whose voices were taken too soon.

It is not a day to mourn what was lost, but to celebrate what lived.
Because every survivor story is also a resurrection story.

“He walks with you in the valley and bends down to reach you in the ashes.”
Beauty From Ashes, Dr. Yonnicka

When the Fire Doesn’t Consume You

When I wrote Miracles in the Mess, I did not write from the comfort of healed wounds but from within the fire. Those words have now become a testament that even in chaos, there’s grace.

“In the early hours of November 5, I became a victim of domestic violence in front of my eight-year-old son… Yet God was already writing a different story in those ashes.”
Miracles in the Mess, Dr. Yonnicka

This account is not simply survival, but transformation.

I remember nights bargaining with God to end the pain, and mornings discovering that survival was itself divine proof.

Through obedience to keep breathing, Breathe Life Ministries was born, which has become an international call for women to find the rhythm of healing again.

The Weight We Carry

Silence is its own form of violence.

Too many women carry the memory of abuse as if it were their fault, their failure, and their sentence. But trauma should not be a definition, it’s an interruption.

Breathe Life Day exists to turn that interruption into a pause for power: a global breath for every woman still learning that freedom is her birthright.

“Hope is not just staying positive—it’s anchoring yourself in God’s mercies.”
Beauty From Ashes, Dr. Yonnicka

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men in the United States experience severe intimate-partner violence resulting in injury, fear, or post-traumatic stress.

Globally, violence against women is one of the leading causes of female homicide worldwide. The weight is not just physical—it’s emotional, economic, and spiritual.

But healing begins the moment a woman decides that fear will no longer own her voice.

Breathing Through the Darkness

Every movement needs a moment of stillness. At noon on Breathe Life Day, the world is invited to pause for one minute and take a collective breath.

A breath for the mother hiding bruises beneath her makeup.

A breath for the teen girl whose worth was spoken down to dust.

A breath for the leader who shows up for everyone else while bleeding quietly inside.

It’s a simple gesture, but it symbolizes the power of life that no abuser, no memory, no nightmare can take away.

“When life is overwhelming… the answer is not in panic; it’s in taking a breath, resetting your focus, and allowing God to fix what’s wrong.”
Miracles in the Mess, Dr. Yonnicka

Beauty From Ashes Conference: Where Healing Finds Voice

The journey from surviving to thriving is not one you walk alone. That is why each year, together with a network of leaders from around the world, we gather for the Beauty From Ashes Conference, this year birthing the first Beauty From Ashes Online Conference, a virtual event where women globally can join and learn to trade pain for purpose.

The conference began as a vision to minister to those facing tragedy such as abuse, grief, persecution, depression, and has grown into a global sisterhood of resilience.

Each session is rooted in real stories and faith-anchored wisdom, echoing the vision God gave me: to make healing accessible, personal, and permanent.

The goal of the conference is not about forgetting what happened but redeeming what did.

“There is beauty still to be revealed —not in spite of what you’ve been through, but because of it.”
Beauty From Ashes, Dr. Yonnicka

The conference mirrors that truth. Each speaker, each session, each moment is a living testimony that ashes are not the end. They are the soil of new beginnings.

When Faith Meets Fear

Even spiritual leaders can find themselves in the crossfire of fear and faith.

In Miracles in the Mess, I write about my own experience pleading with God to take away my pain by taking my life. Yet in that moment of utter desperation, I was reminded of Isaiah 61:3 — that God gives “a crown of beauty instead of ashes, joy instead of mourning, and praise instead of despair.”

That verse is the heartbeat of Breathe Life Ministries. Its mission is not to erase the mess, but to invite God into it, layer by layer, step by step, breath by breath.

Isaiah 61:3 (NIV)
“To bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.”

The Cost of Silence

Violence against women is not confined to geography or faith. UN Women reports that 137 women are killed by a family member every day worldwide.

In the U.S., domestic violence hotlines receive more than 20,000 calls daily. Each call is a cry for help—a plea for someone to believe them, to see them, to help them breathe.

This ministry exists to make sure no one suffocates in silence again.
Breathe Life Day is not a commemoration of pain but a commission of purpose. It reminds the world that trauma does not have the final say. Healing does.

A New Kind of Ministry

Breathe Life Ministries was not born in a boardroom but in a battlefield of the heart. It began with a woman who refused to let fear define her faith.

Today, it stands as a non-profit ministry anchored in healing, faith, and community. From online support groups to interactive devotionals, from crisis resources to the Beauty From Ashes Conference, every initiative echoes one truth: God is still breathing life into what once looked dead.

“Our mess is not the end. It’s the place where His miracles begin.”
Miracles in the Mess, Dr. Yonnicka

Through its workshops and community efforts, Breathe Life Ministries offers women a safe space to rebuild faith and self-worth. The organization’s vision is simple but radical: to replace fear with freedom and trauma with testimony.

Breathing Hope Back Into the World

As November rolls in, the 5th day is the open invitation to everyone, not just survivors of domestic violence but anyone who has lost hope, faith, or direction.

Take a breath for someone who cannot. Share a story for someone still finding their voice. Light a candle for someone who did not make it home.

Psalm 34:18 (NIV)
“The Lord is close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

The beauty of Breathe Life Day is that it belongs to everyone. It’s for the nurse who held her patient’s hand through fear. The teacher who stayed late to listen to a student’s story. The friend who never stopped calling. The father who learned to apologize. The child who refuses to give up on love.

It is for the woman who has lost everything and still chooses to breathe.

The Movement Beyond a Moment

What makes Breathe Life Day powerful is its simplicity. It asks only for presence. For one minute, we breathe together for those still in the fire. For one day, we unite across continents, cultures, and denominations to say, “You are not alone.” And for one lifetime, we commit to turning pain into purpose.

Romans 8:37 (NIV)
“In all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.”

The goal is not viral fame. It’s viral faith. A wave of women who choose to exhale fear and inhale freedom until the world itself starts to breathe life again.

Closing Reflection

If you are reading this and your heart is still racing from the memory of your own ashes, this is for you.

“He’s not done with you yet. There is beauty still to be revealed.”
Beauty From Ashes, Dr. Yonnicka

This November 5, stand with Breathe Life Ministries. Light a candle. Take a breath. Share a story. And if you can’t find the words, borrow mine from Miracles in the Mess:

“Beloved, God does His best work in the mess.”
