Faith After Disappointment: Trusting God When Life Didn’t Turn Out Like You Thought

Some women are disappointed in silence.

They do not always call it that. They call it being tired. They call it needing a break. They call it a busy season. They call it “I’m fine” because it feels easier than explaining the ache of a life that does not look the way they thought it would by now.

They still love God.
They still believe He is good.
They still show up for church, family, ministry, work, children, friends, and responsibilities.

But somewhere under the faithfulness is a quiet grief.
This was not how I thought it would happen.

I thought I would be further along by now.
I thought that prayer would be answered by now.
I thought serving God would protect me from this kind of pain.
I thought I would understand more than I do.
If that is where you are, you are not alone.

The Breathe Life Podcast episode Faith After Disappointment with Pastor Erin Morris is for the woman who still believes, but has questions. It is for the woman who loves Jesus, but is honest enough to admit that waiting, grief, unanswered prayers, and church hurt can make faith feel tender.

And it is for the woman who needs to know this:
Disappointment does not have to be the place where faith dies. It can become the place where Jesus meets you again.

When Life Does Not Turn Out Like You Thought

There is a particular kind of pain that comes when life surprises you in ways you never wanted.

It may be the marriage that did not heal.

The child you are still praying for.
The diagnosis that changed the plan.
The ministry wound no one saw.
The relationship that broke your heart.
The opportunity that passed you by.
The prayer that still feels unanswered.
The version of your life you thought you would be living by now.

Disappointment can make a woman feel disoriented. It can make her wonder if she heard God wrong, if she missed something, if she is being punished, or if God is somehow closer to everyone else than He is to her.

But disappointment is not proof that God has abandoned you. It is proof that your heart has carried hope. And hope, even when it is bruised, can still be brought back to Jesus.

You Can Have Questions and Still Come Close

Some women think faith means never asking hard questions.

But Scripture is full of people who cried out, waited, wrestled, lamented, and still belonged to God.

David asked how long.
Hannah wept in prayer.
Mary stood near a cross she did not understand.
Thomas needed to see the wounds.

Faith is not always loud, polished, or certain in every detail. Sometimes faith is the trembling decision to bring your questions to Jesus instead of carrying them alone.

God is not threatened by the truth you bring Him.

He does not need you to pretend.

He does not turn away from the woman who says, “Lord, I believe, but help the part of me that is tired.”

Unanswered Prayers Do Not Get the Final Word

One of the hardest parts of disappointment is continuing to pray when the answer has not come.

You may have prayed for healing.
You may have prayed for restoration.
You may have prayed for a marriage, a child, a calling, a job, a door, a home, a ministry, or a miracle.

And maybe the answer did not come the way you hoped.

This is where the heart can start making quiet agreements with pain:

Maybe God forgot me.
Maybe I asked for too much.
Maybe He answers other women, but not me.
Maybe I should stop hoping so it will stop hurting.

But unanswered prayer is not the same as an absent God.

There are things we will not understand on this side of heaven. That is honest. But the cross still tells us something disappointment cannot erase:

God came close.
Jesus entered suffering.

He carried sin, grief, betrayal, injustice, and death itself.
And resurrection still had the final word.

Church Hurt and the Heart of Jesus

Some disappointment comes through circumstances.

Some comes through people.

And some of the deepest wounds happen in places where we expected spiritual care.

Church hurt is painful because it can make a woman feel wounded by the very place where she came to heal. Leadership hurt can leave her questioning her calling, her voice, her discernment, and sometimes even her relationship with God.

If that is part of your story, hear this gently:

Jesus is not asking you to pretend it did not hurt.

He is not asking you to protect unhealthy systems.

He is not asking you to confuse bitterness with honesty or silence with healing.

He is inviting you to bring the wound to Him before it becomes the lens through which you see everything.

You can heal without becoming hard.

You can forgive without denying what happened.

You can serve again without ignoring wisdom.

You can keep your heart soft without leaving it unguarded.

What Disappointment Can Teach Us About God

Success teaches us some things.

Disappointment teaches us others.

Success can teach gratitude, stewardship, and courage.

Disappointment can teach surrender, dependence, endurance, and the kind of trust that is not built on getting our way.

That does not make disappointment easy.

It means God can redeem even what hurt.

Romans 8:28 does not say every event is good. It says God works all things together for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.

That is not a slogan to rush someone’s grief.

It is an anchor for the woman who needs to know that pain is not more powerful than God.

The Ten9 Invitation: Come to Jesus

Pastor Erin’s connection to Ten9 Ministries points us back to one of the clearest invitations in Scripture.

Romans 10:9 says: If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

That means salvation is not reserved for the woman who has everything together.

It is not reserved for the woman with perfect church attendance, perfect answers, perfect emotions, or perfect confidence.

Jesus came for sinners.

Jesus came for the weary.

Jesus came for the disappointed.

Jesus came for the woman who has been away for a long time and the woman who has been in church every week while still feeling far from Him.

If your heart is stirring while you read this, do not ignore that.

You can come to Jesus today.

A Prayer to Say Yes to Jesus

Jesus,

I need You.

I believe You are Lord. I believe God raised You from the dead. I believe You came for me, died for me, and made a way for me to be forgiven, restored, and made new.

I bring You my disappointment, my questions, my sin, my weariness, and my heart.

Forgive me. Lead me. Teach me how to trust You again.

Today, I say yes to You.

Amen.

For the Woman Still Waiting

If you are still waiting, you are not forgotten.
If you are still grieving, you are not weak.
If you are still healing from church hurt, you are not disqualified.
If you still have questions, you are still welcome.

And if your faith feels smaller than it used to, bring what is left to Jesus.
He knows how to breathe life into what disappointment tried to bury.

Closing Prayer

Father,

Meet the woman whose heart is tired from disappointment.

You know the prayers she whispered. You know the answers she hoped for. You know the wounds she has carried quietly and the questions she has been afraid to say out loud.

Remind her that You are near.

Heal what church hurt wounded. Restore what waiting drained. Soften what pain tried to harden. Give her courage to trust You again, one honest prayer at a time.

And for the woman ready to come to Jesus, draw her close. Let today become the beginning of a new life with You.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

FAQ

Faith after disappointment means continuing to bring your heart, questions, grief, and hope to God even when life did not turn out the way you expected.

Yes. Disappointment does not mean your faith is fake. It means you are human. Trust often grows when we bring honest pain to Jesus instead of hiding it.

Bring them honestly to God. Pray, seek wise support, stay rooted in Scripture, and allow God to care for your heart while you wait. Unanswered prayer is not proof that God has abandoned you.

Healing from church hurt often requires honesty, prayer, wise counsel, boundaries, forgiveness, and time. Jesus does not ask you to deny the wound. He invites you to bring it to Him so it does not harden your heart.

Romans 10:9 says that if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. It is a clear invitation to receive salvation through Jesus.

You can confess Jesus as Lord, believe in His resurrection, ask Him to forgive you, and surrender your life to Him. Breathe Life Ministries also offers a follow-up form for women who say yes to Jesus and want prayer or next steps.
